A good idea but rather sloppy in use. I really wanted to like these as I hoped to use them with some clients who are on the Autism Spectrum and I hoped it would intrigue them to explore making music by exploring the (colorful) world around them. In use, I never really felt the feedback was working well and delays, non-triggering and generally awkward interaction made me realize my clients wouldn’t engage. As for playing other colors (as opposed to the included colorful input mat), most people’s world doesn’t have “pure” enough colors around them to make that feature very useful (in addition to the sloppy input behavior). Might have been more fun to have them be responsive to some other input, such as how hard they are played, or some simple way to discern between 4 or 6 surfaces which would trigger a pentatonic pile of notes…). Was thankful for the return policy as it gave me confidence to try them out. I wish the developers good luck with any updates, as I said, it’s a good idea, just not for me.

Even cooler than I had expected them to be! This is one of the coolest tech toys/gadgets I’ve seen in a long time! I’d heard the buzz about them during the Consumer Electronics Show, so I was really excited to try them out myself. I’m not sure who has more fun using colors to create music–the kids or me! I didn’t really believe that you really could make the rings work on anything but the play pad, but we’ve tried them on just about everything in the house and it works every time. The app is really easy to use too, and my kids love creating different songs/beat mixes. It has been fun to see them trying new things and experimenting with both sounds and colors at the same time. They often pull the rings out and let their friends try it–and it’s always a hit. If you are looking for a fun toy (for you and/or the kids), I’d recommend giving the Specdrums rings a try–we’ve been extremely entertained by them!
